Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) refers to the combination of physical and psychological symptoms that the majority of women experience during the week or so before their period.
The exact causes of PMS are not completely understood however all evidence points to the fact that the symptoms are related to the fluctuations in hormone levels that occur during the menstrual cycle and in particular ovulation. Lifestyle changes such as altering diet, limiting alcohol consumption and taking exercise can help to alleviate the symptoms of mild PMS. However, for moderate to severe PMS, medical hormonal treatments will often be required.
